Child Sex Offence Recorded on Average Every 8 Minutes in the UK
Feb 20, 2018
Whilst sitting eating my breakfast and watching the news this morning, I hear of child abuse. Today it was statistics. The number of child sex offences recorded in the UK has risen by 15% in the past year, 64,667 cases of Child Sexual Abuse have been reported. (Sexual abuse will encompass physical, mental & emotional).
Almost every day, we hear of the cases of historic abuse by predators who have placed themselves where they are able to abuse. We hear it so often, that I now hear people say ‘I don’t watch the news anymore, it’s depressing’. I question, when the TV/news is reporting these situations, do they become just another number?
Have we now got to a place where because Child Abuse is in the news so often, that we no longer listen? Have we forgotten that Child Abuse is about sexual, physical, mental & emotional suffering of children, children that we may know, taking place every day?
For those who are working with children and young people, it is part of our everyday life. Our clubs and projects are an area where we can support children & young people, where they are comfortable to be themselves and often tell us of what they have been doing, what they like, what they don’t like… And we listen to them. Having worked with children and young people for over 25 years, I met children who had more needs than others, but for each child, we observed, we listened and we talked… We ensured a safe environment where they were comfortable, and confident enough for them to tell us their problems, some of which had to be referred to professionals.
We must never take our safeguarding training & learning as ‘just more training’ and box ticking exercises. We must accept the realities of the world we live in and appreciate the very real skills and tools we learn in Safeguarding, which will help us to support and protect the children and young people in our care.
