Aug 16, 2019

Dept Health

The Government has launched a green paper 'Advancing our Health: Prevention in the 2020s' proposing a series of actions to keep people healthy and independent for longer.

The green paper focuses on 5 key themes and we want to hear your views.

Getting it right in the early years:

Just under a quarter of 5 year olds in England have tooth decay. The green paper will focus on a number of measures to make sure children are healthy and happy from birth and throughout development.

Closing the gap on physical and mental health:

Approximately 1 in 4 people are living with a mental health problem. Our plans aim to close the 'prevention gap' by equipping 1 million adults to look after their mental health.

Empowering better public health:

Around 50% of adults in England are consistently falling short of the recommended 7-9 hours of sleep. We aim to provide people with the information they need to make informed decisions, additionally improving the quality of our food and drink.

Going smoke free:

We are setting an ambition to go 'smoke-free' in England by 2030. The green paper proposes an ultimatum for the smoking industry to outlaw smoked tobacco and consulting on raising the age you can purchase tobacco from 18 years.  Moving to healthy weight:

Since 2003, rates of adult obesity have doubled (to 29%), the prevention green paper outlines a number of suggestions to address this, from banning the sale of energy drinks to under 16s and reducing sugar in baby food and drink.

Respond to the consultation here by 14 October 2019.
